Thoughts on the Assassination of Charlie Kirk

In a show of humanity’s utter fallen state of sinfulness, a person assassinated Charlie Kirk, a prominent Christian and conservative social & political commentator. He began this career seemingly before even the age of 18, and quickly became a prominent voice across college campuses (and elsewhere) promoting public discourse of ideas. Whilst many recognize him more for his political and social commentary, they gloss over his constant praising of the Lord, calling people to Christ, prayer, and promotion of Christian ideas.
In no ways is this to be disparaging, but as we all are, he too was a sinner, although perhaps one of the better of us, in need of a savior. He publicly proclaimed time and time again that Jesus was the way to eternal life and it was upon the Lord that he laid his foundations. Likewise, his wife demonstrates the same fruits of the Spirit.
Yet, it was not venomous rhetoric, but mere truths laid out in respectful manners that provoked evil to end his life. It is with heavy hearts that we mourn this loss, for he leaves behind a wife and two small children. We grieve for widows, but it’s quite unimaginable for small children to have lost their father to the actions of a mad man. May the body of Christ surround this family to bring them comfort and support in everyway possible.
As Calvin taught, we cannot know ourselves unless we know who God is. Charlie knew God and demonstrated a deep relationship with Him. It was to God that Charlie gave the glory. Because we know he put his trust in Jesus Christ alone, we know that the what Satan meant for evil, the Lord used to show His glory. The Lord did not author the evil–humanity needs to aid in this. The Lord may permit evil to exist, for a short while, but one day evil will be abolished.
Isaiah 25:8–9 (ESV): “He will swallow up death forever; and the Lord God will wipe away tears from all faces, and the reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the Lord has spoken. It will be said on that day, ‘Behold, this is our God; we have waited for him, that he might save us. This is the Lord; we have waited for him; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.‘”
John 3:14–15 (ESV): “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.”
Because of the work that Jesus already did upon the cross, having died for our sins, and defeating death, we too may have eternal life by having faith in Him. Charlie is now with the Lord because he trusted in Jesus. He literally trusted his life to Jesus. Whilst the mad man may have believed they killed Charlie, He is very much alive in Heaven, and shall reunite with his family one day. This life is but a mere flash in the grandeur of eternity with Jesus.
I’m sure the Holy Spirit was with Erika as she posted this verse, just hours before her husbands tragic religious and political assassination. The truth of the Lord’s Word is both poignant and comforting, forcing us to address the realities of this world, whilst pointing us toward the future hope that is in Christ.
Do not let evil silence you from speaking the Truth. Be bold and proclaim the Gospel. Make your faith known. Let the fact you follow Christ emanate from every aspect of your being. In all things, your faith should influence your views–culture, politics, world view, etc. Dwell in Scripture and know it. We are in a war, not just of militaries, but one against demonic spirits. Armor yourself with the Lord.
Ephesians 6:18–20 (ESV): “praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.”
Proverbs 28:1 (ESV): “The wicked flee when no one pursues, but the righteous are bold as a lion.”
2 Timothy 1:7 (ESV): “for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.”
Do not count on tomorrow to surrender your life to Jesus now. Your very eternity depends on it.
