Worry Not, Jesus is Lord!
Psalm 110 is the most quoted old testament Scripture within the New Testament. If Jesus found it to be this noteworthy, perhaps it is a verse that we should revisit to see what it says and draw application from it.
The Lord says to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.” The Lord sends forth from Zion your mighty scepter. Rule in the midst of your enemies! Your people will offer themselves freely on the day of your power, in holy garments; from the womb of the morning, the dew of your youth will be yours. The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, “You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.” The Lord is at your right hand; he will shatter kings on the day of his wrath. He will execute judgment among the nations, filling them with corpses; he will shatter chiefs over the wide earth. He will drink from the brook by the way; therefore he will lift up his head.
Psalm 110:1–7
Here we have David speaking of a king that he calls “my Lord.” David is known as the greatest king, although flawed. While we know this verse to be prophetic of Jesus, for the Jewish people before Jesus, this Psalm would have been quite puzzling. Who is this king that even David calls “my Lord?”
It also states that all will be forced to recognize the rule of this king. It speaks of a priestly-king, which is only found in Jesus Christ. Ultimately, the psalm declares that Jesus will be victorious over all His enemies.
Today, we live in a rapidly changing world. While sin has existed since the fall, it does seem that we are seeing a dramatic increase of moral deterioration. While we know Scripture provides us the standard of morality, the world rejects it. Instead, it has redefined what is considered morality. As Scripture teaches us, the world is calling good evil, and evil good.
Seeing such changes occurring so rapidly can cause us concern, but we know that God has this all under control. Perhaps this rapid increase toward sinfulness is the Lord allowing the world to destroy itself. It seems the post-modern world view that is being pushed is so inconsistent that there is opposition within its own adherents.
We know that the Lord will win over all His enemies, so perhaps the Lord has given the secular world to their own debased thinking. In the absurdity of post-modern thought, the Truth will come out. It is an opportunity to bring people back to the Truth that God has revealed to us. So how shall we then live?
I believe Jesus answered this for us:
And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Matthew 28:18–20
Jesus has all authority—he is in control. Pay attention to the “therefore.” We are to make disciples because He has authority and because He has authority, we must go forth. Even the evil that is in this world will be used to glorify God. Let us pray that people will see the false morality being promoted today only brings more evil, so that the light of Truth may shine in the darkness. Let the world turn to Jesus and find their true Salvation in his death, resurrection, and Lordship.
